                                ORDINANCE NO. 9557
                  
                  
                   AN ORDINANCE NAMING THE FIRE AND POLICE
                   TRAINING CENTER FOR FIRE CHIEF JOE KNOWLES.
                  
                                                    
                  
                  
       	    	 WHEREAS, Chief Joe Knowles was in the Chattanooga Fire
       Department for thirty-two (32) years, was one of the pioneers in
       the Training Division, and was Fire Chief for nine (9) years; and
       	    	 WHEREAS, on November 10, 1983, Chief Knowles was
       involved in an automobile accident which resulted in his
       retirement; and
       	    	 WHEREAS, Chief Knowles was very active in pursuing the
       Fire Training Center and as a result of his hard work and
       endeavors Chattanooga built one of the finest Training Centers in 

       the United States; and
       	    	 WHEREAS, Chief Knowles was assigned to the Training
       Division in 1964 as a Lieutenant Instructor, was promoted to
       Captain in 1968, was promoted to Acting Assistant Chief in 
January
       1969, was promoted to full Assistant Chief in 1972, was promoted
       to Deputy Chief in 1974 and to Chief of the Department in 1976, 
in
       which position he continued to serve until his retirement
       September 11, 1984;
                                NOW, THEREFORE,
       	    	 SECTION 1.  BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
       CITY OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, That the Fire and Police Training 

       Center be and is hereby named the Joe Knowles Training Center.
       	    	 SECTION 2.  That this ordinance shall take effect two
       (2) weeks from and after its passage as provided by law.
